Designing any course is a time consuming process if it is done correctly. Thankfully, we have many resources available to help. As I begin the process of designing a math class with my blended innovation plan using the COVA-CSLE model, I have used two resources. The first, is Fink's Learning Outcomes 3-Column Table. The second model is the Understanding by design (UbD) template developed by Wiggins and McTighe. I found both, the UbD and 3-Column Table , useful.
I started with the 3-column table. The 3-Column Table is a broad look at a Geometry Unit. The table helped me get my thoughts and ideas organized. As the organization began to form, the table helped me focus on student learning. I began to draw my focus toward authentic learning activities and true learner understanding of concepts.
The second model I used was the Understanding by Design model. I found the UbD template much more detailed. As I worked with this model, I found myself focusing on authentic learning activities. I see this template very useful when helping new teachers or teachers new to the idea of authentic learning environments. With the details of this template, I have less worry of forgetting any details when repeating the activities with several classes.
As I worked with both models, I see myself using both when designing future units. I found myself referring to both models during the design process. I started using the 3-Column Table to help design the UbD table. As I worked on the UbD model, I found myself making changes to the 3-Column Table. I feel like blending the two models would help create a better unit of study.
